A framework for efficient wastewater treatment and recycling systems AgEcon
Mekala, Gayathri Devi; Davidson, Brian; Samad, Madar; Boland, Anne-Maree.
Use of un-treated/partially treated wastewater for irrigation in the dry countries of Asia and Africa and recycling of treated wastewater in the water scarce developed countries has become a common practice due to various reasons. While the lack of wastewater treatment to appropriate levels before use is a major problem in developing countries, the high cost of wastewater recycling is the major problem in developed countries. The current paper is part of a doctoral research and presents the conceptual framework for the research and the methodology that can be used to tackle the problems associated with wastewater recycling.

Agricultural use of treated sewage effluents: agronomic and environmental implications and perspectives for Brazil Scientia Agricola
Fonseca,Adriel Ferreira da; Herpin,Uwe; Paula,Alessandra Monteiro de; Victória,Reynaldo Luiz; Melfi,Adolpho José.
In many studies worldwide the use of treated sewage effluents (TSE) as water and nutrient sources in agricultural irrigation have been introduced as a viable alternative for wastewater destination in the environment. Considering agronomic and environmental aspects the objectives of this review were: (i) to present an overview of TSE irrigation on different agro-systems (annual crops, orchards, forests and forages); and (ii) to show the principal changes on chemical, physical and microbiological soil characteristics after TSE application. Various studies have revealed that the nutrient supply only by TSE irrigation was not sufficient to meet plant nutrient requirements resulting in yield decreases. The problem could be solved by an adapted...

CORN FERTILIZATION USING SWINE WASTEWATER AND SOIL-WATER ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY REA
Rosa,Danielle M.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Pereira,Pâmela A. M.; Reis,Ralpho R. Dos; Sbizzaro,Mariana.
ABSTRACT: Soil application of swine wastewater for nutrient cycling may represent a correct destination of these residues and reduction in production costs. However, when applied to soil, such residue may cause environmental impacts. This study aimed to analyze the chemical characteristics of the soil, corn, and leachate after successive swine wastewater applications associated with mineral fertilization. The experiment was developed in drainage lysimeters under field conditions. Wastewater doses applied were 0, 100, 200, and 300 m3 ha−1 with and without mineral fertilization. The results were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test. After nine years of application, a special attention should be taken regarding water quality from a dose of 200...

DETERMINAÇÃO DA TARIFA DE REUSO DE ÁGUA NO DISTRITO INDUSTRIAL DE FORTALEZA SOB A ÓTICA DO CUSTO MARGINAL DE LONGO PRAZO E DO MÉTODO DE AVALIAÇÃO CONTINGENTE AgEcon
Fontenele, Raimundo Eduardo Silveira.
In the last years sanitation companies have restrained their investments, not just due to the fact that the necessary resources of the sector exceed by far the classic possibilities of the national budgets financing, but also due to the fact that the traditional solution of external financings have their restrictions. It is also observed that the charges of tariffs, not considering the cost of the services done, have caused imbalances which also represent subsidized allocation of resources, mainly to private sector. From the application of two distinct methodologies - the long-term marginal cost and the contingent valuation method, this article has aimed to present tariff values to be charged from users of the Water Reuse of the Industrial District of...

Electrical conductivity of soil irrigated with swine wastewater estimated by time-domain reflectometry¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Soncela,Rosimaldo; Sampaio,Silvio Cesar; Vilas Boas,Marcio Antonio; Tavares,Maria Hermínia Ferreira; Souza,Claudinei Fonseca; Soncela,Adriana Smanhotto.
Wastewater application to soil is an alternative for fertilization and water reuse. However, particular care must be taken with this practice, since successive wastewater applications can cause soil salinization. Time-domain reflectometry (TDR) allows for the simultaneous and continuous monitoring of both soil water content and apparent electrical conductivity and thus for the indirect measurement of the electrical conductivity of the soil solution. This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of TDR for the indirect determination of the electrical conductivity (ECse) of the saturated soil extract by using an empirical equation for the apparatus TDR Trase 6050X1. Disturbed soil samples saturated with swine wastewater were used, at soil proportions of 0,...

Reis,Matheus Mendes; Silva,Ariovaldo José da; Santos,Leonardo David Tuffi; Lopes,Érika Manuela Gonçalves; Barros,Rodrigo Eduardo; Donato,Luan Mateus Silva.
ABSTRACT Wastewater can be considered an excellent nutritional and water source for cultivated plants. However, the presence of high concentrations of salts and toxic compounds can negatively affect crops. The effect of irrigation with different concentrations of treated wastewater on the accumulation of nutrients and gas exchange aspects of millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.) grown in clay soil and sandy loam soil was analyzed. This study was conducted in a greenhouse (16°40’57,50” S; 43°50’26,07” O; 650 m) in a 5 x 2 factorial design, consisting of five levels of concentration of treated wastewater (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%), combined with two types of soil (clay and sandy loam). The experiment was designed in randomized blocks with four replicates....

Nitrogen removal from swine wastewater by combining treated effluent with raw manure Scientia Agricola
Kunz,Airton; Steinmetz,Ricardo; Damasceno,Simone; Coldebela,Arlei.
Effluents from swine raising can be harmful to the environment if not correctly managed. Nitrogen (N) is usually the main element present at high concentrations in the effluent. Since the use as biofertilizer is not always a feasible alternative, the treatment of swine wastewater is necessary. Variations in N species and water solubility make the treatment difficult and expensive. Additional N removal at low cost via denitrification may be possible by recirculating nitrified effluent in the barns. In this study, raw manure (RM) was homogenized with treated effluent (TE) at RM/(RM + TE) ratios of 1.0, 0.9, 0.8, 0.7, 0.6, 0.5 and 0 in order to simulate the effect of reused water on swine wastewater nitrogen removal. Samples were collected daily during four...

Nonpoint source pollution by swine farming wastewater in bean crop AGRIAMBI
Doblinski,André F.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Silva,Vanderlei R. da; Nóbrega,Lúcia H. P.; Gomes,Simone D.; Dal Bosco,Tatiane C..
In order to verify the environmental impact of the application of swine farming wastewater in bean crop, an experiment was set up in the Experimental Farm of PUCPR - Toledo, PR, Brazil. Runoff and soil samples were collected at the end of the experiment. Four wastewater treatments were utilized during the experiment (50, 100, 150 and 200 m³ ha-1) and the without wastewater as the control. The results demonstrate that (i) the amounts of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen in runoff are exponential, (ii) that phosphorus has a seven-fold polluting potential compared to potassium and three-fold compared to nitrogen, and (iii) that the mobility of potassium in the soil profile is the largest, followed by those of nitrogen and phosphorus.
